Dublin-based writer and presenter Deirdre Mullins recently made the trip to Rossnowlagh to have a chat with Easkey Britton, one of Ireland’s finest surfers.
Over the next five months Deirdre will travel across Ireland interviewing five extraordinary Irish women to find out what drives them. Easkey was the first on Deirdre’s list, and paid a visit to her home in Rossnowlagh.
Easkey, who is also an environmentalist, and a documentary film maker, believes that mindfulness and balance are key to being happy.
Deirdre’s article on Easkey, published in the Irish Times, states that Easkey’s morning routine includes yoga, journaling, and meditation.
She also doesn’t go near her phone or laptop until she has been awake for an hour, so as she can focus on herself and check out the surfing conditions for the day ahead.
Easkey gives Deirdre a surfing lesson, but instead of teaching her how to stand upright on the board, she instead opts to teach her how to breath in time with the waves to connect with the ocean’s energy.
Easkey tells Deirdre that an analogy of a tightrope walker can be applied to life, that a balance must be found between tension as well as ease saying; “It’s about finding the flow between these dynamic forces in our lives. From the need to rush to get things done as well as the need to be still and present.”
