Pauline Cafferkey, the nurse who was infected with Ebola in 2014, has been taken to hospital today.
The medic, who is a cousin of soccer star Packie Bonner and has many relations in west Donegal, originally contracted Ebola while volunteering in Sierra Leone.
It has been reported this morning that she was taken to Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University under police escort after falling ill at her home in South Lanarkshire.
She is said to be in a stable condition, and is being monitored by the infectious diseases team at the hospital.
Ms Cafferkey, aged 40, had been working at the Save The Children centre in Sierra Leone when she contracted Ebola in 2014. She is said to have made a full recovery from the disease last year, but has suffered from illness due to complications from the infection.
She was recently cleared by a misconduct panel of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, where she faced charges for returning to the UK with the virus.
Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has tweeted: “Sending my very best wishes to Pauline Cafferkey. She has already suffered way too much – & all for trying to help others. Thoughts with her.”
