Raphoe Boxing Club
On Friday night Raphoe boxers, Dennis Lafferty and Danny Dougan were in action at a major tournament in Gortin, Co. Tyrone. Both boxers gave good accounts of themselves on the night, only to lose out on points to quality opponents. Raphoe boxers Dennis Lafferty and Orin McDermott, along with Coach Gerard Keaveney and Secretary Peter O’Donnell will travel to Essington, Philadelphia from 2 nd to 8 th November to take part in a major invitational tournament hosted by Dan Mullarkey’s ‘Must Box Gym’. Everyone at the Raphoe Club extend best wishes for every success to all four club members.
The Raphoe Club will have five boxers entered for the forthcoming Donegal Novice Championships to be staged in Letterkenny on Sunday 9 th October and good luck to all the boxers from their club mates.
The Raphoe club will host its first annual boxing showpiece of the new season on Saturday 19 th November in the Deele College Sports Pavilion when the local club boxers will face the star studded Ulster and Connacht All Stars and Raphoe’s Head Coach and Match-Maker, Gary McCullagh has pencilled in 14 quality contests for what should be an excellent evening of amateur boxing. Sincere thanks goes out to all the generous business people of Raphoe and surrounding areas for their continued financial support for without those people the local club would fail to exist. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Raphoe received a good result again in this year’s National Tidy Town’s Competition bringing the town’s marks up to 310 points in Co Donegal Category C coming 2nd place to Glenties. Raphoe also received two Awards this year plus a prize of €900.00. This was not a bad result considering the town was judged on Wed 29th June during a day of heavy rain & stormy conditions. The Adjudicators concluding remarks in this year’s report state:
“Raphoe as a Diocese in Donegal is often mentioned but Raphoe, the town, has been a new and refreshing experience for this Adjudicator. Thank you for including the heritage brochure as it helped enlighten one to the antiquity of this town. You are the present inheritors of the treasures that are commonplace on your streets and you can be proud of your efforts to enhance not just the built environment and the environment but also the living surroundings of the present population.”
Raphoe Tidy Towns Committee, Supervisor & Staff wish to thank everyone in our community for this great result for our town.
