A man has appeared in court charged with an incident in which up to HALF A MILLION euro of damage was caused.

Paul McGinley, aged 30, from Glen Hola, Gortahork, was arrested in connection with yesterday’s incident at Letterkenny Main Street.

A total of nine cars were destroyed and two shops severely damaged when a fire broke out at an underground carpark at Rosemount Lane.

Garda Emmett Brady gave details of officially charging McGinley who faces a total of ten different charges including one of burglary and nine of criminal damage.

Garda Inspector Goretti Sheridan told the special sitting of Letterkenny District Court she as objecting to bail because of the seriousness of the charges.

She also said there will be more serious charges.

She said the matter was very serious and said they were now awaiting specialist engineers to arrive at the scene to assess the cost of the damage caused.

After discussing the matter with his client, solicitor Frank Dorrian said his client posed no flight risk and did not have a passport.

However Judge Paul Kelly said he was refusing bail as he did believe there was a risk that McGinley would not show up for his future court sittings.

He remanded him in custody to appear at Letterkenny District Court on Monday next.

The court was also told that another man arrested in connection with the same incident is currently in Letterkenny University Hospital.
