A number of Donegal men have been left devastated after the Iceland Government confirmed that they don’t need immigrants to marry Icelandic women.
An article appeared online earlier this week, in which it suggested the Icelandic Government was willingly to pay immigrants €5,000 a-month to marry Icelandic women due to a ‘shortage’ of men in the country.
The story went viral all over the globe, and Iceland’s Foreign Ministry was inundated with hundreds of enquiries regarding the controversial proposal.
Due to the volume of enquiries, a spokesman from Iceland’s Foreign Ministry was forced to issue a statement to an Icelandic media outlet in order to confirm the story as a hoax.
A spokesman for the department told the Iceland Monitor, “Iceland’s Foreign Ministry has received dozens of enquiries from men interested in taking up the Icelandic government’s offer of $5,000 to marry an Icelandic woman and make up for the lack of men in the country.
“Unfortunately for the interested gentlemen, news of this exciting offer is a not-so-elaborate hoax posted on a website called ‘The Spirit Whispers’.
“Despite the exceedingly questionable nature of the posting, dozens of men have contacted Iceland’s Foreign Ministry to get more information on this alleged proposal..
“Every enquiry has been personally answered – obviously to the effect that the piece is a complete hoax and that there is absolutely no initiative in place to pay foreign men to come to Iceland and marry local women.”
It hasn’t been officially confirmed but it is believed at least fifty men from Donegal were among the hundreds that enquired about the unique initiative. 😉
