Seamus Coleman will lead out Ireland against Serbia tonight, as Martin O’Neill’s side begin their World Cup qualification campaign.
The Killybegs native hasn’t featured for Everton so far this season due to an ankle injury he sustained in pre-season.
However, he has suffered no reaction since resuming training with the rest of the squad, and will be passed fit to play.
The talented right-back has been identified by O’Neill as the player that will lead Ireland as captain – following the retirement of Robbie Keane.
Ireland face a tough test in a hostile environment in Belgrade this evening, and O’Neill is delighted his new captain is fit to play.
O’Neill told The Irish Daily Mail, “Seamus is fine. He played before the start of the season and he’s naturally fit.
“He’s trained with the group the past few days and there hasn’t been any reaction.
“He’s a huge player for us, and we’re delighted he will be OK to play for us in what will be a hugely difficult encounter for us in Belgrade.”
Coleman captained Ireland in their epic EURO 2016 win over Italy, he kept the armband for the last 16 clash with the French.
Tonight, he will embark on what will hopefully be the beginning of lengthy spell as captain of the Republic of Ireland.
Kick-off at the Marakana Stadium is 7.45pm.
