Figures released by Motorstats today show the most popular vehicles sold in Ireland from January to August, and recorded a massive boom in vehicle sales from 2013.
Total car sales amounted to 138,538 this year, a massive increase from 2013’s 68,599 units.
Donegal accounted for 3,375 passenger car units (2.44% of the market), 586 (2.39%) of light commercial vehicles, and 62 (2.51%) of heavy commercial vehicles (tractors, coaches, trucks)
The most popular time of the year to buy a car was January and July – as the new number plates are issued on these months.
As for CO2 rating, 78% of passenger cars now have an A rating, with only 0.02% on the other end of the scale with a G rating. Electric cars have slightly increased in popularity. 0.26% of cars (1 in 400) on the roads today are electric, compared to 2013’s 0.06% (one in 1,666).
The most dramatic fall in sales in recent years was between 2008 and 2009 following the economic crash. Vehicle sales decreased from 145,436 to 52,572 – a little more than a third of what had been sold in 2008.

The top selling cars are;
(1) Hyundai Tucson such sold 7,229 units
(2) Volkswagen Golf, 4,682 units
(3) Ford Focus, 4,662 units
The most popular light commercial vehicles are;
(1) Ford Transit Van, 3,112 units
(2) Ford Transit Connect, 1,910 units
(3) Volkswagen Caddy, 1,590 units
The top selling heavy commercial vehicles are;
(1) Volvo 3 Axle, 729 units
(2) Mercedes-Benz 2 Axle, 367 units
(3) Renault 4 Axle Rigid, 233 units
