1. Believe in change – A leopard may never change its spots, but you’re not a leopard! Every day, people just like you make changes that transform their lives.
2. Learn from the past – Think of your past weight-loss attempts as a series of experiments that have provided valuable information about what doesn’t work for you.
3. Forgive and move on – When things go wrong, our reactions – be they self-criticism, anger, shame – are often worse than the thing itself. By being compassionate with ourselves about failure, we can recover more readily. Be as supportive to yourself as you would to a good friend.
4. Make it your priority – However much you might want a complete life overhaul, your chance of achieving your goals are improved if you tackle them one at a time. Make losing weight your number one priority.
5. Write a wish list – Take some time to make a wish list of all your reasons for wanting to lose weight. Focusing on things other than just appearance will mean you’re more likely to succeed in the long term.
6. Watch your language! – The way you talk to yourself matters. If you catch yourself thinking, “I’ll never stick to this for the rest of my life, so I may as well give up now”, stop yourself and say, “On step at a time – every day makes a difference”. Today’s progress might seem small, yet the long-term results won’t be!
