A politician has made a bid of just €1 on a former bank building with an asking price of €110,000.
Donegal county councillor Michael Mac Giolla Easbuig says the bank now belongs to the people as it was the people who bailed out the banks.
And now he is calling on others not to bid on the former AIB building in so it can be turned into a youth club.
Local auctioneers Sherry Fitzgerald Rainey are selling the property which is located in Derrybeg, Gaoth Dobhair in West Donegal.
Now Councillor Mac Giolla Easbuig has officially put a €1 bid on the premises and hopes it will put others off from purchasing it.
“The reality is that we, the people of Ireland, bail out the banks including AIB so we should have a say on the future of this building.
“I have put an official bid on this building and I am hoping it will be accepted.
“This is a fine building and it could make a very good youth club for the children and young adults of this area.
“Why should the banks capitalise once more after we came to their rescue?
“This area has been left devastated over the years through job losses and our youth have been left with no option but to emigrate. Why shouldn’t the children of families who have chosen to stay not be afforded a decent premises for a youth club,” he asked.
A public meeting on the future of the building will be held in the locality tomorrow night.
