Stewart Brown Limited, a Buncrana based personal insolvency agency, is warning debtors of a ‘sick new scam’ sweeping the country which bullies debtors into giving them money lest they face public humiliation.
The scammers, who call themselves BadDebtors, threaten people who are currently in debt with public humiliation through social media and local press, unless they pay them a ‘fee’ to have their details ‘removed’ from this fictional, non-existent register.
Ryan Stewart says; “We believe the source of targets for the scammers are lists of court judgments, insolvency registers and other information which may be able to provide details of a debt outstanding.”
“Scarily, for anyone in Ireland who has gone bankrupt, or entered into a formal arrangement with their creditors, the company have also included the logo of the Insolvency Service of Ireland (ISI) at the bottom left corner of the letter, inferring that the company are acting with the ISI’s blessing, while the ISI have since made clear to us, that the company are using their logo without permission.”
Stewart Brown Ltd. have conducted a basic investigation into this company, and found that the address listed on the letters corresponds to a ‘virtual office’ in Dublin City.
They said; “There is much more to the story, which we cannot publish as yet for legal reasons”.
They concluded; “If you have received a letter like this, we would ask that you contact us confidentially at your earliest convenience on 074 9390199, and we will do our best to assist you. Furthermore, do not pay and do not have any further contact with BadDebtor or BD Publications.”
