As part of the 1916 commemoration Glenties will reenact one of the last acts in the War of Independence, an ambush which took place in Kilraine (just outside Glenties on N56) in early July 1921.
The reenactment will be part of this year’s Harvest Fair Festival celebrations and will be reenacted on the very spot that it happened in 1921. The event will be on Saturday 10th September at 4pm.
The ambush was a well planned event with great reconnaissance of the area with scouts and surveillance of the patrol that was to be attacked. The patrol was from the Barricks in Glenties which was a Black and Tan strong-hold with a sprinkling or R.I.C.
About 1pm each day a patrol of steel plated Crossley Tenders, with its compliment of Tans would travel from Glenties through Ardara on to Killybegs spreading terror on their journey.
The scouts on the day were Dan Mc Loone, Meenanaal, Glenties and Francie Gallagher , Dorrian, Glenties were well positioned as they had a view of the road in and out of Glenties and the ambush site.
