Race Report : Ironman Copenhagen
For most people a marathon is a major achievement or indeed a centenary cycle or possibly a 3.8k swim . An Ironman Triathlon requires you to complete all three events within seventeen hours.
The club has two more members who completed this epic event, Seamus Morrison and Sean McAuliffe. It is fair to say that swimming would not be their best discipline but they took to the water in Copenhagen and emerged having completed the swim in similar times of 1.52.17 for Seamus and 1.49.19 for Sean .
They then set off on a course used for the World cycling championship in 2011 and Seamus just missed out on a 30k per hour time of 6.06 with Sean completing the course in 6.57. The course had rolling hills and passed some famous Danish landmarks.
They then both ran a full marathon on a four lap course cheered on by a crowd of 150000 lining the streets and finished outside the Danish parliament.
Well done to both men from everyone in the club.
Ballina Salmon Triathlon
At the other end of the age and distance spectrum, Christine Russell made a welcome return to racing after injury and was second woman home in the river based sprint triathlon in county Mayo. She won her category in an excellent time of 1.08.51 and was twentieth overall.
Gartan Challenge
The Gartan swim goes from strength to strength and credit is due to the local hard working committee some of whom are club members.
There were three races held last weekend and members participated in all three. Aidan Callaghan won the 3.8 k swim with Siobhan Gallagher first woman home. Danny Mooney was fifth in the 1500 metre race with Lisa Dalton just behind him. Louise Alcorn was first club member home in the 750 metre swim with great performances for a lot of members who tried out this distance for the first time. Thirty six members took part overall.
Donegal Marathon
Quite a few members doubled up on Sunday running the half marathon. Adrian Callaghan along with his son in a buggy completed the full marathon. Gavin Crawford was second followed home by Michael Black and Danny Mooney. Twenty two members ran the 21.1 k route.
Table Quiz
As part of the preparation for Kona, Aidan Callaghan is hosting a quiz in Arena Seven Friday 26th at eight pm. There will be teams of four and loads of spot prizes. Everyone is welcome.
Open water safety
The club organizes a supervised swim session every Monday evening at six thirty pm for all members. A swim route is set up with a kayak to cover that swim route only. If anyone wants to use Gartan lake outside that time, please enter from the heritage centre entrance point and please make sure you have a swim partner and swim buoy for personal safety. There is a club shed for changing and the lock code is available from any committee member.
Training continues as follows
