Senior Football
Buncrana 0-4
Fanad Gaels 1-7
Buncrana senior footballers took on Fanad Gaels on Saturday night. Unfortunately this was not a night for our seniors who lost out on this occasion. Although the result was not for us it will not darken an otherwise good year with a top 2 finish in sight for the seniors.
Sean Parker, Conor Grant, Bruce Waldron, Stephen Doherty, Kevin O’Loughlin, William McLaughlin, John Doherty, Peter McLaughlin, Garbhan Friel, Andrew Doherty, Odhran Doherty X, Aodhan Stokes, Oisin Doherty X, Darrach O’Connor, Kevin Tracey.
We wish Odhran Mac Domhnaill well in his recovery. He is a U12 player with Buncrana GAA.
Sean Masterson Tournament
This was undoubtedly the highlight of the week at the Scarvey, if not the year! U-10 teams from all over Ulster travelled in what was a tournament that could stand up to the best in Ulster and the rest of the country.
It should be understood that this could only run with the success that it did through the help of some very dedicated club people. What was weeks of planning proved to turn up a fantastic event that has impressed all clubs who travelled. Children were treated to a day of football and entertainment, especially when a certain Glenswilly player showed up. Our own club players gave up valuable time to officiate during the day. From underage club players to Donegal players, everyone from our club gave up their time to show respect and gratitude to Sean Masterson. Nobody takes it for granted that there would be little or no GAA games in Buncrana only for Sean and we take this time to thank him for all he has done for Gaelic Games and the opportunity that Buncrana young people have.
In often happens that when you thank those in these situations that you leave someone out. So on behalf of Buncrana GAA and the clubs and children, we thank all those that organised this event. Especially the man with the megaphone and siren and his assistants. Ye know who ye are. Finally to the teams that travelled with their players we hope to see ye back again.
U8 Report- Football
A section of the u8s formed the buncrana 3rd team in the SM tournament. The boys started off against st Eunans and struggled with the pace of the game losing 6 – 1. They showed great character to come back and draw against termon following a penalty won and superbly converted by young Cian mccarron in their second match. They next played a strong Galbally side and battled hard before going down 5-0.
This placed the lads in the semi final of the vase tournament with neighbours steels town. A great game saw us come out with a one point victory. In the final we played st Eunans again. Despite being fatigued due to playing with the bare minimum st Eunans to their credit managed to lead midway through the second half before buncrana started linking their play better against the tiring cathedral side. Oisin Dohertys point taking was a feature and the match went to extra time. Nothing could separate these sides until the aforementioned Doherty struck a free sweetly over with the last kick off the game to send the buncrana boys wild.
Special mention goes to Danny Doherty who played well in midfield and missed his aunties wedding to help this team to victory. His character is reflected by all the squad and if these boys stick at it, there’s no question they have the makings of a fine team.
Hurling
Senior Championship Hurling:
Buncrana v Burt, The Scarvey, Wednesday, August 17.
In hurling terms this was youth versus age. 14 of the Buncrana line-out were U21’s (and half of them were minors); over half of the Burt team have worn senior shirts for ten years and more. Apprentices faced master craftsmen. It was also a game of the proverbial two halves: the master craftsmen dominated the first period; the apprentices matched them in the second.
In the early moments the home team threw down the gauntlet with shots from Paul Nelson and Tom Clare narrowly missing the target. Much of the rest of the opening period saw Burt take charge of the scoreboard. Evergreen Marty McGrath marshalled his defence and kept the young Scarvey forwards at bay. Niall Campbell scored six of his team’s nine first half points and Micky McCann was always dangerous. Much credit must go to all of the Buncrana defenders. Goalkeeper Declan McCarron, still a minor, had a game worthy of any seasoned senior, likewise eighteen year old Paddy Wilson at full back. A late pointed free from Tom Clare left the visitors leading by eight at half time.
Buncrana came out firing after the interval and soon their youth was outrunning the older opposition. Three points from set pieces by Jack O’Loughlin as well as shots from Tom Clare, Daniel Wilson and the young Enda O’Rourke sailed over the Burt crossbar. McCann with a fine goal and Campbell from frees added to the Burt tally. When referee J J Lafferty blew for full time it finished Buncrana 0-07, Burt 1-14. Burt continue in the knockout stages of the senior competition.
Buncrana play in the Junior Championship.
This game gives a snapshot of the remarkable progress of Buncrana hurling. Last year the same opposition in Hibernian Park gave the Scarvey boys a severe trouncing, a cricket score comes to mind. Arguably the second half in
Wednesday’s game saw the young Buncrana team play the better hurling. They are a work in progress. All fifteen players who wore the green, white and orange deserve great credit. Credit is also due to the passion and ability of the management team led by Seamus Grant and Tom Clare Senior. Half a dozen capable young cubs will come on board next season and add to this young but increasingly experienced squad. Things look good.
The Buncrana team was: Declan McCarron, Jamsie Doherty, Paddy Wilson, Kevin Vaughan, Aiden Stokes, Jack O’Loughlin, Daniel Wilson, Paul Nelson. Conor Grant, Daniel Deery, Sam Doherty, Tom Clare, Ronan McGrory, David Doherty, Enda O’Rourke.
