Donegal women are following in the footsteps of A-list celebrities in eating their own placenta.
It may seem shocking to some but eating placenta is the most natural thing in the world for mothers, an expert on the process will tell this weekend’s Bump and Baby Expo in the Radisson Blu Hotel in Letterkenny.
Donegal Placenta Encapsulation Specialist Caroline Doherty transfers placenta into capsules which can then be taken 1-3 times daily to help support a healthy emotional and physical post-birth recovery.
The Buncrana mum-of-seven says more and more Donegal women are choosing the path taken by celebs including Kim Kardashian, Alicia Silverstone and Colleen Rooney in opting to reap the benefits of placenta’s recovery properties in capsule form.
“Today mothers are rediscovering the benefits of natural placenta remedies for healing after giving birth.
“The placenta is an amazing organ which allows your baby to feed and grow. The consumption of placenta is a potent postpartum remedy and useful preventative care measure for mothers who have just had a baby.
“Packed with essential vitamins, minerals and hormones, the placenta is exactly what a new mother needs in the days and weeks after giving birth,” she says.
Caroline adds: “Placenta encapsulation makes consumption palatable and easy, and the benefits are profound. It is the only organ that is grown from and functions for two people – mum and baby.
“At this weekend’s Bump and Baby Expo Letterkenny I’ll be explaining the benefits of placenta encapsulation and how placenta can also be taken in smoothie form or even used in special tinctures, balms and creams.”
The placenta is the organ that connects mums to their unborn children for nine months, sustaining life, feeding, nurturing and cleaning babies until birth.
After birth the placenta is expelled and has been commonly disposed of by hospital incineration for many years.
However, some cultures have long viewed the placenta as a magical or spiritual organ with a deep bond between the mother and her child. These cultures have often planted, cooked or eaten the placenta in a ceremony of thanks for the blessing of a healthy child.
Chinese traditional medicine has been using the placenta in remedies for centuries.
Now mums and babies can benefit from the benefits of placenta in Donegal.
Caroline adds: “Our clients report many benefits from their placenta remedies including more energy, improved mood, less depression or baby blues, better milk supply, faster healing, clearer skin, faster wound healing, less hair loss and more.”
