Thousands of young people will collect their Leaving Certificate results on Wednesday.
Parents should speak to their children about the dangers of binge drinking ahead of the Leaving Certificate results being released on Wednesday, an expert group have said.
Alcohol Action Ireland, the national charity working to reduce alcohol harm, said that while thousands of students will be celebrating, parents should try to chat to them beforehand about the risks of excessive drinking.
Conor Cullen, Head of Advocacy and Communications with Alcohol Action Ireland, said consuming too much alcohol can ruin what is supposed to be a happy occasion.
“Students deserve to go out, celebrate getting their results with their friends and we hope they enjoy marking this milestone in their young lives.
“We know that, for a significant number of young people, their plans to celebrate this week will include alcohol.
“This is reflected by the fact that they are being targeted by venues, particularly through social media, with drinks promotions that encourage the type of harmful alcohol consumption that is a threat to their health and wellbeing.” said Cullen.
