‘It will never happen to me.’
‘I’m in good health and I will take my chances.’
‘I don’t think I need that much cover.’
‘I don’t have children, so I don’t need cover.’
‘I can’t really afford it right now.’
‘My significant other has a good job and we can live on that if worse comes to worst.’
‘Sure, I’ll get social welfare.’
These are only SOME of the excuses people use to justify why they don’t protect their incomes, or protect their families against the financial impact of a serious illness.
I get it! I really do. None of us wants to think about what we would do if the worst happened. No-one likes feeling uncomfortable.
by Shona Chambers of John McColgan Financial Services
Recently, someone I met socially asked me what I do for a living, and my response was this:
My job involves asking clients the difficult questions about themselves and their families.
Questions like:
• How would you pay your mortgage or rent if you couldn’t work due to illness?
• Could you and your family realistically pay your bills and future expenses (such as educating children) if you couldn’t work due to illness?
• What would YOU as a single person or as part of a couple do if your income suddenly stopped due to illness?
In short, I ask the questions that make people feel uncomfortable!
As I am sure you will agree, I am a real barrel of laughs!
I DO understand that this is the part of financial planning that most people would like to skip. Part of human nature is the desire to dive straight into the good stuff! With financial planning, most of us want to start saving and paying into our pensions, where we can see an instant tangible benefit.
However, protecting yourself and your family is the most important part of the financial planning process.
You wouldn’t build a house without laying proper foundations. Good financial planning is the same.
It is good to be positive, but we have to be realistic, folks. Bad things do happen to good people.
The good news is there are financial solutions.
A good financial advisor like me can advise you how to lay the best foundations for your financial plan.
To give some of you a nudge in the right direction, I am offering 10% off the price of all standard rate serious illness applications that are submitted and accepted between August 15th and mid- September 2016.
