Captain Denis Martin clearly had some influence over the weather gods on Saturday as Captain’s Day was played, by and large, in some fine, if not windy, weather. The wind was behind the players on the front nine which meant that a lot of people were in contention at the halfway point. However, it was a different story on the back nine where there were quite a number of casualties.
After the first 18 holes there was a tie for first place with Gerry McGreevy and Bobby Carey coming in with terrific scores of 62 net. Following closely in their footsteps was the hotly tipped Ger Dalton with a great score of 63 net. In a slight change in protocol, the two leaders went out first in the 9 hole playoff with Chris Marriott and Shane Greer who were battling it out for the best gross score. (Shane would eventually win out as the winner of the gross prize). While the conditions remained dry but windy, Bobby and Gerry could not maintain the same level of golf which they produced earlier in the day.
However, the same could not be said for Ger Dalton who produced another consistent nine holes in the play-off and won the Captain’s Prize by a clear two shots. Ger has featured prominently in the prizes over the last year or more and has always had a burning ambition to win “The Captain’s Prize” at Dunfanaghy Golf Club. Bearing in mind all the work which Ger has put into the Club over the last number of years, it was an absolute delight for Captain Denis Martin to present Ger with the winner’s prize of a two night stay in the luxury Harvey’s Point resort hotel. Congratulations to Ger on his great win. Nobody is more deserving of this great accolade.
In his speech, Captain Denis spoke of what an honour it was to serve as Captain for the year and thanked all those who assisted him since he took up the reigns. Lady Captain Mary Lafferty came in for some very well deserved praise for all the work she has put in, not only since the beginning of the year, but indeed over the last number of years. In a very heartfelt acceptance speech, Ger Dalton reminded us all of the fantastic Club we have, and again expressed his great joy in, at long last winning “The Captain’s Prize”. Cheryl Chambers won the Captain’s Prize for the Ladies which was played earlier in the week.
On Friday evening the Captain’s scramble was played in some rather difficult conditions with Billy Griffin, James T Sweeney and Gillian Robinson coming out on top.
On Thursday evening John and Cheryl Chambers proved to be better than everyone else in the mixed foursomes finishing a short distance ahead of Bill and Paula McCallion.

Events for the Week Ahead:
The Caravanners Classic will take place on Saturday 20 th of August. This is one of the most popular events of the year. The time sheet is quite full already so please ensure that you get your name down as soon as possible. The presentation will take place on Saturday evening at 9pm followed by music and dancing!
The Club Mixed Foursomes Matchplay Competition 2016 final will take place on Friday 19th August at approximately 4pm, followed by presentation of prizes. Prizes will be awarded to semi finalist and finalists.
On Friday the 26th August the Ladies Club will present the remainder of the proceeds of the sponsored walk to the Club. Our hope is to run an open 3 ball better ball competition on that day and to include a 2 course meal after the golf or on that evening. If you are having your meal in the evening please let the Club know as the chef would need to have an idea of how many are eating. If you are not interested in playing the golf you can still have the meal.
Either way please confirm to the Club if you are eating in the evening. Total price for food and Golf €20.00. Entertainment on the night by Gerry O’Sullivan. Please confirm by Tuesday 23rd August.
