Olympics: There was disappointment for Donegal’s badminton star Chloe Magee this afternoon after she suffered defeat to World No.2 Wang Yihan at the Rio-centre.
Magee delivered a gutsy display, and showed her undoubted class and quality throughout the contest, but her Chinese opponent proved just too strong.
Wang Yihan, was an Olympic Silver medallist at the London Games in 2012, and is currently ranked No.2 in the world.
She is tipped by many to claim gold in the Women’s Singles, and avenge her final defeat from four years ago.
At times in this contest, she really was unplayable, but Magee showed admirable courage, determination and quality to stay in the contest.
However, despite her valiant efforts Wang Yihan defeated Magee on a score-line of 21-7, 21-12.
All is not lost for Magee – the Raphoe native has another group game left on Saturday.
In what promises to be another tough match, Magee faces Germany’s Karin Schnaase.
