A Letterkenny man who decided to cycle across America to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society is close to fulfilling his dream.
Roger Holmes is now just over 200 miles from New York after raising more than €6,000 on his amazing two month journey from San Francisco to the Big Apple.
Roger will hopefully arrive in Central Park around 5.30pm this Sunday after what he admits has been a ‘crazy’ journey.
But behind his journey, he left a serious health message for men of his own age.
“Trans Atlantic Cycle has been tough, crazy, tiring, but amazing, rewarding and life changing too. It feels good to be making a difference.
“I’m sending out a message to all men in their mid 40s and older, to go and ask their doctor about a PSA blood test. It could make a huge difference to the quality of your later years,” he said.
Roger recently rode with another Trans-American adventurer called Mike, through the Appalachians, which he said reminded him of his journey through life.
“At one point we were in a disused motorway tunnel which was a mile and a half long. It was impossible to see the light at the other side. I thought this was symbolic of the struggles that so many people face. Sometimes we have to venture into the dark unknown.
“It’s not nice, and hard to do, but we just have to keep moving onwards through the cold and dark. Eventually, if we keep going no matter of the fears we go through, we will see the light at the other side,” he added.
So far, Trans Atlantic Cycle has raised around €6,000 for the Irish Cancer Society.
Roger added “I’d like to thank everyone for their amazing support. If you have family in Philadelphia or New York City, tell them to watch my updates for an ETA. We will have a good old Irish American hooley!”
