Wednesday 3rd Open, sponsored by Carpet Interiors, Mountain Top, Letterkenny and played in rather inclement weather saw Liam Wiseman [10] beating the ‘storm’ and the field into submission when, despite an inauspicious start of back-to-back bogeys at Hall Door [1st] and Glebe [2nd], countered with back-to-back birdies at 4th [Sliabh Sneacht] and 5th [Inishowen] followed by another birdie at 17th [Aughaninshin] but no doubt those double bogeys at 9th and 18th, which left him with 19pts each nine, contributed to Liam requiring a B.O.T. from Conor Coady [19], both returning 38pts each.
With Conor also starting his round with a double bogey, it was the ‘blanks’ at 12th [Sheep Hill] and Barnhill [16th] which placed him second but good enough to relegate Seamus Patton [5] to third place, Seamus having eliminated his bogey at 1st woth a birdie at pat five 7th [The Isle] for a level par front nine but no less than four dropped shots on back nine cost him a higher placing.Gross was won by the ‘birdie man’ of Barnhill, Joe Coyle [5] who, with four birdies on the card at 2nd, 4th, 8th and 15th giving him 33 gross pts., has to blame lapses of concentration at 7th and 14th for two ‘blank’ holes.
Sunday 7th Open, sponsored by Arena 7, Letterkenny, saw a fantastic return on the day that it was from Tony Mc Namee [23]. With heavy rain and gale force winds in the afternoon that bordered on monsoon weather, Tony’s ‘blank’ at 2nd was forgotten with his birdie at 5th and his second birdie at 15th giving him a 40pt winning return over runner-up Stephen Walsh [16] who showed son Lee that ‘the aul fella’ can play golf also!
Recording a birdie at 2nd, Stephen’s nines of 19pts each for a 38pt total would have been significantly more if not for that triple bogey at Crievesmith [9th]. In third place was welcome visitor Raymond Foy [19] with 37pts to outpoint Mark Doherty [9] 4th on 36pts.
