Donegal defender Eamon McGee has retired from inter-county football following their exit to Dublin in the All-Ireland quarter-final at Croke Park on Saturday evening.
Colm McFadden immediately announced his retirement on Saturday evening, while it is believed McGee has also done so after a glittering career.
He posted this cryptic tweet (below) from the Hollywood blockbuster Lord of the Rings, while his brother Neil posted a picture of a group of mates under the tagline “Eamon’s retirement party’.
Social media is awash with tributes to the McGee is was on of the finest and most colourful players to ever play for Donegal.
McGee was without doubt one of the finest defenders Donegal ever produced, he was skilled in the art of defending, but also had tremendous technique and superb vision.
McGee was immense in the All-Ireland winning season of 2012, and for this writer was MOTM in that final against Mayo.
The only blot on his glittering copybook of success, is the fact he never won an All-Star.
How he was never given one – really is a mystery, surely one of the best players to ever play the game that didn’t win the accolade?
The Gaoth Dobhair man was never far from controversy, and was never afraid to express his views and opinions, and was recently named as one of most interesting player in modern GAA by sports website Balls.ie.
What a player, what a servant, what a character – you will me missed!
Thanks for everything Eamon!
Enjoy your retirement!
