RTE pundit Pat Spillane, a long time critic of Donegal’s style of football, has risked the wrath of Donegal supporters yet again.
Spillane wrote in The Sunday World today, that he was delighted Donegal had been knocked out of the All-Ireland series.
He also took pleasure in the fact that Tyrone were also knocked out by Mayo, again pointing to their defensive style of play.
The multiple All-Ireland winner with Kerry, has been a vocal opponent of defensive systems.
He blames Donegal for creating the current culture of defensive football – which he says is rife in the game all over the country.
Spillane said, “Dublin made hard work of getting through to their All-Ireland semi-final with Kerry in three weeks time.
“It wasn’t at all fluent as Donegal dragged Dublin down to their level with their awful defensive football.
“At least we’re finished with it now for the summer of 2016, with the defeats of a tiring Donegal side and a Tyrone team that as nowhere near as good as it looked all year.
“Thank god they’re out!”
“Dublin mixed the good with the bad, great point taking with wonderful pace and power.
“Even though a man down (and more) they ran Donegal out of it in the second-half.”
His comments are sure to spark an angry response from thousands of Donegal fans who took great pride in the effort and heart they showed – as they gave the Dubs their first real test of the summer – and gave them a hell of a fright.
