Gold and zinc company Connemara Mining Company have struck gold in Inishowen.
In a report published today, the mining firm announced results of the third and fourth hole drilling at Inishowen. They found multiple high-grade veins which contained elevated gold values. Further drilling is to take place and identify the depth of the vein.
The findings, which equate to a gold grade of 5.8 grammes per tonne, is said to be reminiscent of Dalradian, County Tyrone, however Connemara Mining Company CEO John Teeling said that it will be another few years before Inishowen becomes a major gold-mining site.
Teeling also commented; “The fourth, and last hole, in the current drilling campaign produced some very good results. Hole 16-MR-07 was located close to the hole in the last campaign which also produced high-gold grades. There is clearly a high-grade gold zone in the area of these holes. The next phase of drilling will be designed to follow the veins.”
The license area also contains the area of Glentogher, which was first mined for lead and silver in the eighteenth century.
In 2013, a Tellus border survey, illustrated below, revealed that the border counties are full of gold and other precious metals.
It looks like Donegal band Goats Don’t Shave were correct when they sang how “there’s gold in them there hills”.
