David James’s new single ‘My Donegal Doll’ has reached number 1 in the Irish country chart this week.
David who is only 18 years old has been singing on the road for the last three years and has played all over Donegal, as far down as Louth and up as far as Belfast.
“My love for country music developed from my love for jiving. I did a bit of musical theatre and then began to sing country and I’ve never really looked back.” – David told Donegal Daily.
David was awarded “Best Young Entertainer 2016” at the music city awards this year.
“I was overwhelmed by the award and the support I have received since.”
‘My Donegal Doll’ is written by David Oliver. It was recorded about 5 years ago however David Oliver did more of a folk take on the popular song.
“We wanted something fresh and exciting and so after much debate and brainstorming we decided to record ‘Donegal Doll’ but put a real country feel to it.”
The song was released on the iTunes store at 7.45pm on Tuesday the 2nd of August and by 11.30pm that night the song was already number 1 in Ireland and number 12 in the UK.
“I was literally lost for words. It was an absolute dream come true. To see my name ahead of Taylor Swift in the charts was just amazing.”
Tonight Wednesday, David is playing alongside the famous Derek Ryan at the Clonmany festival, which shows the talent and recognition David has at such a young age.
Ever the modest one, David told Donegal Daily “I have a lot of work done, and a lot of work to do.”
A real performer with a huge career ahead of him we wish David McNamee the very best in the future and a massive well done on the first of many we hope number ones.
