Fitness blogger and competitive bodybuilder Kelly Donegan has left the days of TV3’s Tallafornia behind her and launched a successful career as a competitive bodybuilder.
In her new book, Build Your Own Body, she tells how working out and fitness has helped battle her demons and how exercise can help everyone.
She writes of how she turned to fitness to cope with her crippling depression and how exercise helped her change her life.
The book is split into two parts – the basics of fitness and the plans aimed at beginners, intermediate and more advanced.
It is not a bikini bodybuilding manual but it does offer advice and encouragement on how to drop a couple of pounds ahead of your holidays or make long term changes.
She covers fitness for all levels and debunks diet myths and the media’s obsession with unrealistic images of women. There are tips on the best foods to eat, how to curb sugar cravings and how to build exercise into your daily routine.
In all, the book sends a positive, pro-active message to women about staying fit and healthy for themselves and building and maintaining a healthy relationship with food.
It is an easy read for people starting their fitness journey and promotes a healthy body image as well as promoting exercise as a way to benefit mental health. Her message is simple “enjoy getting fit and staying healthy”.
She emphasises that the plans in the book are guidelines only and it’s about finding a routine that suits you and that you can build into your daily life.
A lot of the tips are common sense but sometimes just reading them in a different way, in a different mindset can change your outlook and help you take that first step to try and get fit.
After reading the book, the one thing that is clear, fitness is open to everyone and you can start your journey anytime.
