Garda Inspector says motorists tampering with plates to avoid speed cameras

July 23, 2016

COURTS: A leading Garda believes some motorists are altering their license plates in order to avoid being detected by speed cameras.

Head of the Donegal Traffic Corps, Inspector Michael Harrison, made his comments at Letterkenny District Court.

He was speaking during the case of a young motorist who was not displaying proper license plates.

Michael Friel, 19, with an address at Ballyheerin, Fanad appeared at Letterkenny District Court on Thursday morning.

The vehicle he was driving displayed front and rear plates in which the identification marks on both were not conforming.

On the 24th of October, 2015, Gardaí observed a Subaru Impreza vehicle which had plates not conforming and pulled the vehicle over.

It was being driven by the defendant but the vehicle actually belonged to his sister.

The court heard that Michael Friel was very unhelpful with Gardaí when they questioned him about the vehicle.

The defendant was employed as a farm assistant on the family farm.

Inspector Garda Harrison said that the reason he felt motorists were tampering with license plates was in an effort to avoid being detected by speed cameras.

Judge Paul Kelly fined the defendant €150 for the front plates and €150 for the back plates.
