LIGHTNING is dazzling in the west Donegal skies tonight as a storm created by the continental heat of today passes over the Atlantic.
Around 300 homes in Ballyshannon and Laghey lost power earlier this evening.
ESB Networks says power will be restored in these areas soon.
Most of the lightning is out at sea and provided an incredible spectacle for residents along Donegal’s western seaboard this evening.
Residents in Gaoth Dobhair report “amazing” strikes, but they could be seen up to 40kms away.
Weather forecasters had warned of the possibility of heavy thunder storms but so far the storm – or most of it – has stayed at sea (pictures of strikes in the past hour are below).
It follows a very hot day in Donegal with temperatures at Finner Camp reaching 26C.
It’s all downhill again however as normal July weather returns for the next week – sunshine and showers.
