There are currently 70,000 workers in Ireland earning minimum wage which currently stands at €9.15 an hour. It is rumoured that the Low Pay Commission is recommending a 10c increase in the rate, to €9.25 an hour.
It had been a goal of the government to increase the minimum wage to €10.50 by 2020, something which would seem to be a distant goal if just a 10c increase is implement for 2017.
The last time the minimum wage was increased, it went from €8.65 to its current level – a far greater increase of almost 6%.
A 10c increase in the minimum wage now would represent just a 1% increase.
According to RTÉ, the Cabinet is considering the latest Low Pay Commission proposals today.
