Aidan Callaghan qualifies for Kona:
The pinnacle of long distance triathlons is the World championship held every October in Hawaii.
To qualify for this event you have to qualify by placing wel l in a qualifying event. To do this is a great achievement, but to do it in your first Iron man event is almost unprecedented.
Aidan Callaghan in his first year going long finished twentieth overall in the Iron Man event held in Bolton at the weekend in a time of 9.53.58. he was racing along with ten professionals and because of his high placing has qualified for Kona. His splits were as follows
3.8 k swim 51.54
180k cycle 5.30.41
42 k run 3.21.03
He finished strong passing professional athletes on the run after a very strong swim and cycle.
On a separate note Bryan Mc Crystal who warmed up by winning the Gartan Olympic Triathlon recently was fifth overall after the best cycle of all the competitors and is also Kona bound.
In other events the national sprint championships were held in Longford and there were good performances from Siobhan Gallagher, Triona McMenamin, Eugene McGettigan , John Conaghan in the main sprint event and Brian Sweeney in the Swim bike event. It was a family occasion for Triona as four sisters raced on the day with two podium finishes between the four of them. On the five k scene there were good performances from Jason King in Liford , Danny Mooney, Gavin Crawford and Lisa Dalton in Churchill.
Danny Mooney had a busy week finishing third overall in the Pulse Aquathlon in Dublin On Wednesday and winning the Churchill 5 k on Friday. Niamh Mc Daid also raced well in Dublin finishing fifth Woman.
On the adventure race front there were also strong performances from Mark Hunter, Billy Black, Sharon Black, Evelyn O Kane, Karl Sweeny, Philip Robinson , Raj Mehan and Terence Quinn.
In the six k swim in Mullaghmore in Sligo Jason Black , Karen Crawford, Paddy Bond and Fergus Callaghan all swam well in difficult conditions.
Next up is the sprint triathlon in Ballyshannon for The MSC tri club event.
Please note the quarterly swim fee for July to the end of September is now due for all participants.
