It’s an odd feeling when the sun shines on Donegal. A lot of the time, we’re so used to the wind and the rain that we don’t actually know what to do with ourselves.
Here’s eight things that happen across Donegal when we get a bit of good weather…
(1) The barbeques see the light of day for the first time in what could be years, allowing dads everywhere to pretend they’re chefs for an hour or so.
(2) Common conversations amongst Irish mammies include; “It’s a great day for the drying” and “jeez isn’t there a wile stretch in the evenings now?”
(3) We complain when it’s cold, and we certainly complain when it’s hot!
(4) Our beaches get mobbed as everyone rushes to enjoy the only two hours of summer we’re likely to have. You even might spot the odd sunbather.
(5) We get extremely smug that our neighbours are in Portugal and we’re probably getting better weather than them.
(6) Midges come out of their secret lairs and ruin everything, prompting a conversation as to what their true purpose on this earth is if not to torture us.
(7) Thinking “it’ll be grand” as you cast aside the suncream, only to regret it later when you look like a 5’8″ lobster. Don’t worry, you can pass it off as a farmer’s tan once the swelling goes down.
(8) We appreciate our beautiful scenery more when it’s sunny outside. Donegal natives are not adverse to the odd dander around Glenveagh or a trip out to Slieve League (you know, because we can actually see how pretty these places are without mist and rain!)
