My Dog just has no toilet manners.
As the old saying goes “you cant teach an old dog new tricks”. My dog is 5 years old now so no point trying to toilet train him its useless.
Well think again! That old saying is completely incorrect actually it couldn’t be further from the truth. You can teach a dog at any age almost anything.
If you are having trouble toilet training your dog just follow these few steps to master toilet training for any dog at any age.
Dogs and puppies will normally need to potty after they eat, after playing games, waking up from naps and after long chewing sessions. If you know when they need to go then with some easy management it can be quite simple.
Firstly buy yourself a crate (ask for advice on crate training). The crate should be large enough for your dog to stand up turn around and lay down it’s not a place to leave your dog for hours on end during the day. Dogs and puppies will generally not urinate or defecate were they sleep. If the crate is too big you may find your dog or puppies may relieve themselves on one side and sleep on the other. A crate will give you a great night’s sleep knowing you’re not going to wake up to a huge mess every morning.
Next you want to put your dog or puppy on a feeding schedule and lift the bowl when he is finished. This allows you to time when your dog or puppy needs to go to the toilet. Generally they will need to go 15 to 30mins after eating.
Dogs tend to gravitate towards grass to relieve themselves so it’s pretty straight forward. When you take them out give them some free time without talking to them and let them do their business. Once they have done their business a good boy/girl is sufficient. We don’t want to give our dogs high value rewards for going potty just encase they try pull that trick in the house for a nice treat.
Now you have the tools for teaching where to use the toilet but what do you do when they have an accident in the house?
Well you don’t do anything apart from clean the mess and get some pet cleaning equipment to get rid of any scent. Never stick your dogs head in the mess or shout at it as you may find dogs that have been “trained” this way will often go to different places around the house and try and hide the fact that they just ruined your nice rug.
The only time you can really shout is if you catch them in the act of doing it and this is more to interrupt them going then bring them straight outside.
So just remember to be consistent with training and never expect a dog to hold their bladder longer than a few hours. Take your dog out regularly and always before bed, waking up, after play, food, water, or chewing. If you see them sniff around its time to take them out.
Have fun.
