DONEGAL soccer player Carl McHugh is joining Motherwell – and Plymouth Argyle are far from happy.
The English club has released a statement expressing their disappointment with the player. They say that McHugh had ‘agreed in writing’ terms to extend his stay at Home Park.
However, over the weekend, news of Motherwell’s interest became known to McHugh and he has reneged on his earlier decision to remain with Plymouth which had been agreed in writing between Argyle’s CEO Martyn Starnes, Carl, and Carl’s agent Sky Andrew last Friday.
Said Plymouth: “Carl subsequently confirmed in a telephone call with manager Derek Adams that he was planning to travel back to Home Park on Monday for pre-season training.
“However, on Monday morning, we were advised by Carl’s agent that he had been contacted by another club over the weekend and that Carl had expressed a wish to speak with them.
“We have now been informed that Carl has decided to join the Scottish Premiership team.
“We are extremely disappointed that Carl has changed his mind and chosen to join Motherwell after he had previously given his agent the authority to extend his contract with Argyle.”
The versatile McHugh, who can play at centre-back, full-back or as a holding midfielder, made the move to English football with Reading at the age of 16. In 2012, he moved on to Bradford.
He joined Plymouth in the summer of 2014.
