Another mass demonstration against water charges is to be held in Dublin on September 17th.
Right2Water Donegal has welcomed this decision and is urging as many as possible to attend.
Chairperson Charlie Mc Dyer believes that it is time to get feet on the street again.
She said “The people of Ireland have marched again and again and yet the Government refuses to listen. Their hand-picked Commission is nothing more than an exercise in sugar coating the charges to make the medicine go down easy”.
Ms. Mc Dyer goes on to say “to add insult to injury we have had to endure the EU telling us Fianna Fail gave away our exemption from water charges and that we have to pay. This is scandalous behaviour and further serves to reinforce the notion that Irish Water will be privatised. The Irish people need to show strength in numbers on September 17th and hammer home the message that we reject Irish Water in its entirety.”
Spokesperson Sinéad Stewart also urged as many people as possible to prepare for a massive march on September 17th.
“This Government is determined to press on with their plans for Irish Water and water charges. They clearly have no respect for the democratic wishes of the people of Ireland and are displaying nothing but contempt for us by attempting to take the heat out of this issue, in other words, they believe they can fool us into thinking this is for our own good or that the EU Directive insists upon water charges.”
RIHT2WATER Donegal is urging Ray Earle from the European Water Association to go on the record on national radio and tell Fine Gael and Labour that they are misleading the public by informing them that under the EU Water Framework Directive they have to impose water charges.
Ms. Mc Dyer says that from speaking to people in his locality, he has noted a huge loss of respect for Fianna Fáil, as they allowed “Fine Gael’s decision to try and whitewash the issue with this not-so-independent commission. Quite a few people have told me they only decided to vote for Fianna Fáil because they changed their stance on water charges and promised to abolish them in the months before the election…
…they’re feeling very let down by that party at the moment because they only agreed to a suspension. Well enough is enough.”
RIGHT2WATER Donegal is urging members of the public to come along on the day of the protest.
Spokesperson Phillip Mc Fadden stated that “almost 100 TDs were elected in the recent General Election stating that they would end water charges and abolish Irish Water. We are calling on all these TDs to put their political shoulder behind the wheel and bring their constituents what they promised….the end of water charges, the abolition of Irish Water and a referendum ensuring water in Ireland will never be privatised”
