West Donegal and the wider gaeltacht community is in mourning following the sudden death of Raidio na Gaeltachta’s Donegal station manager Seamus McGeady.
One of life’s true gentlemen, Seamus passed away yesterday (Mon) aged just 55.
Tributes have been flowing in for the much-respected and loved broadcaster.
Seamus had succeeded Edel Ni Chuarrain as editor of the station and was held in high regard by all of his colleagues.
He was a working reporter and only yesterday had presented the popular Barrscealta programme.
A passionate GAA fan, on Saturday evening last he traveled to Cavan to do a live broadcast of the Donegal and Monaghan Ulster championship semi-final game.
He was heavily involved in the local community in Gortahork, where he lived at Ardsbeg with his wife Dolores.
Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher said he was “devastated’ to hear of Seamus’ sudden death.
“I am devastated to have learned of the tragic and untimely passing of Seamus. He was at a true professional as an administrator and journalist.
“He was a fair and balanced journalist as a presenter, analysts and commentator and his commentary on Gaelic Games was legendary. He at all times maintained the highest of standards in his profession.
“There is a dark cloud over all Irish speaking communities throughout Ireland. My sincere sympathy to Dolores and family and to his colleagues in Raidio Na Gaeltachta,” he said.
Meanwhile Minister Joe McHugh said it was with complete shock that he learned of Seamus’ death.
“My heart goes out to his family who will no doubt devastated by this news. To his colleagues in Raidio Na Gaeltachta, this will be a big blow to the entire team.
“Seamus has left a strong legacy in his contribution to community, current affairs and sport. His love for the language and for his inspirational way of encouraging others to speak the language is something I would have felt first hand.
“His welcoming smile and positive disposition to life will always be imprinted in the minds of so many. May he rest in peace,” said Deputy McHugh.
The staff of Donegal Daily would like to express our sympathy to the family and colleagues of Seamus at this difficult time.
