Fine Gael Minister of State Joe McHugh TD has welcomed the news that a site has finally been found for the proposed Buncrana school campus – after a 20-year search.
The Department of Education and Skills has met with Crana College, Coláiste Chineál Eoghain and Gaelscoil Bhun Cranncha, to tell them that they have identified a preferred site and has requested the local authority, Donegal County Council to enter negotiations with the landowner.
“I have been in regular contact with Anne McHugh and other Board members of the ETB over recent months, and also the CEO of Donegal County Council, as well as the Parents Association of the three schools in question,” said TD McHugh.
“I also remain in close contact with the Minister for Education and Skills Richard Bruton, and officials from the Department, and continue to prioritise this project and emphasise the importance of progressing this three-school campus for the parents, students and teachers of these schools.
“With funding secured in the School Building Projects 2016-2021 for this project, announced last November, this would enable these three schools to continue to meet the accommodation requirements, which are now full to capacity, with this new proposed development.
“I am aware frustration has set in, therefore it is important now to continue with the progress of this long awaited development quickly, and I again welcome this news with regards the site selection and acknowledge all those involved in reaching a decision.”
