She spent her second last day at Lurgybrack National School as she has spent many of her days – surrounded by learning and laughter.
The education system in Co Donegal will be a lot poorer today when Anne Foxe retires from her position as principal of the school on the outskirts of Letterkenny.
There were tears but a lot of happy memories too as the school held a goodbye concert for Anne who has worked at the “top of the hill” for the past 35 years since 1982.
Originally from Ballymahon in Co Longford, she took over as principal in 2004 and helped guide the school through good days and bad.
One of her proudest moments came in 2014 when the new school building was opened, and this was followed a short time later in 2015 when the school open its Autism Centre.
Anne was clearly emotional today as parents and children gathered for one last time to see Ms Foxe address pupils and staff.
A specially-decorated cake with the words ‘School’s out forever’ decorated across it was made for the occasion.
Anne was presented with numerous gifts by her many pupils including books and plants.
A spokesman for the school told Donegal Daily “Ann always worked tirelessly on developing the school. She had the passion and vision to push for the new school building that is now evident at the top of the hill.
“All the children, staff, parents and wider community wish Ann a very long and happy retirement. She will be sorely missed.”
Anne will stay on around the school until August and plans to travel during her retirement with Lanzarote one of her favourite places.
