President’s Week continued on Wednesday 22nd with the Yellow Pepper Restaurant sponsored open and ‘staking’ his place in the winners’ circle was Seamus Patton [6] with a level par gross round consisting of a bogey at Crievesmith [9th], an eagle at the par five 11th [Settlement] and another birdie at 14th in-between bogeys for a 42 point return to pip runner-up Michael Mc Elhinney [17] on b.o.t, Michael having recorded 21pts for each nine. In third place was Keith Shiels [9] whose birdie at Hall Door [1st] was eradicated by a ‘blank’ at 6th [Hackett’s Best] but birdies at par three 16th and 18th giving him 40pts. Gross prize went to Pat Boyce [7], recording a level par score thru first eleven holes before bogeys were intertwined with birdies at 15th [Candalabra] and 18th [Stockade] for a one over gross 73 and 35 gross points.
Friday 24th saw the annual Pre-President’s Mixed Foursomes and taking the honours there were Ulster Cup team captain Eamonn O’ Carroll and playing partner Grainne Hinds with a return of 47.7 whilst in second spot was the pairing of John Russell and Kay Kelly with 48.0.
On Saturday 25th the club hosted one of the season’s ‘majors’ and taking a ‘major’ role in proceedings was cat 4 member Pat Mc Garrigle [26] who, with a course management plan of playing handicap golf, returned 20pts over both nines for a total of 40pts to pip runner-up Con Boyce [4] by one point to lift one of this year’s most coveted prizes. Con’s return of one over gross 73 consisted of bogeys at 1st and 6th cancelled out with birdies at 2nd and 5th, going level par thru twelve holes only for a bogey at par three 13th [Hunters Home] to have him miss out on top rung. In third place was one of the club’s most consistent competitors, James Mc Fadden [12] whose birdie at The Isle [par five 7th] gave him an outward nine return of 22pts but that was cancelled out by double bogeys at 10th and 15th for a 38pt. finish. In fourth place was Darragh Mc Menamin [5] with 37pts [bot] and gross prize was taken by Conor Friel [5] with 33 gross pts. The President’s Prize to ‘veterans’ was won by Dessie Shiels snr [23] with 33pts and the ‘committee member’ prize was won by Michael O’ Malley [13] with 32pts.
Sunday 26th saw annual sponsors the Glencairn Hotel, Castleblaney, [Mr. P. Mc Fadden] host their Open and congratulations to cat 4 member Joseph Diver [24] who, despite a double bogey at 1st and a ‘blank’ at 3rd, showed great perseverance to record a birdie at Stack Yard [14]for a back nine of 26pts on his way to returning a winning score of 43pts. In second place was last year’s most consistent junior, Philip Cassidy [12] who, despite scores of bogey at 1st, double bogey at 3rd and ‘blank’ at 12th still returned a very commendable 40pts to outscore newcomer Barry Whyte [12] on 37pts. Gross was won by Jack Patton [5], recording a two over gross 74 and 34 gross pts.
Congratulations to the club’s ‘Seniors’ team who travelled to Rosapenna Golf Club on Friday last and secured 2&1/2 matches in their fist leg encounter and also to the Ulster Cup team playing at home on Sunday last, taking a 4&1/2 to 2&1/2 result for their return leg to Shandon Park on this coming Sunday. Competitions continue with the Friday 1st July Open Stableford, the annual Crumlin Children’s Hospital Classic on Saturday, Mc Gettigan’s Gala, Letterkenny & Lifford Open on Sunday and the Speer’s Drapery Open on Wednesday 6th July. Captain’s Day is on Saturday 16th July and the annual Cancer Care Breast Unit Charity Open sponsored by Silver Tassie Hotel will be held on Friday 22nd.
