Donegal athlete Nikki Bradley has broken the world record for the fastest woman to break 5k on crutches.

Nikki, who was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, at just 16 completed her challenge in Holland on Saturday.

The 30 year old Nikki traveled to Tilburg, Holland to team up with Dutch athlete Michael Robbert Brans, who broke the male category record at the same time, on the same track.

Brans, an amputee athlete, was waiting at the finish line for Nikki which she crossed amidst emotional scenes.

Nikki posted on her Facebook page that she was delighted after smashing the record.

The previous record was 49 minutes, but Nikki smashed that time.

And the rules were clear – if Nikki’s right foot touched the ground at any point, she would be immediately disqualified.

The brave motivational speaker learned recently how she will have to have her leg amputated.

But that hasn’t stopped her taking on challenge after challenge.

She climbed Mount Errigal in January and trekked across an Icelandic glacier in February.

And she for some fun she also abseiled down the outside of Fanad Lighthouse.

She has revealed her latest challenge but with the bravery, courage and determination she has shown, it’s not if but when Nikki completes it.

#inspirational.
