FOOTBALL: Concern has been expressed following a rule proposal by the Donegal Schoolboys League, which will be tabled at an AGM tomorrow morning.
The DSL have written to clubs requesting that they agree to allow them to ‘fine’ the club – should any of their players not wish to make themselves available to the League Committee for selection on League Centre squads.
However, this has caused concern among many parents and club delegates who believe the rule is extreme, unnecessary and unclear.
There are many queries both club delegates and parents have regarding the rule, and they are demanding that there is clarification surrounding all queries before the proposal is voted on by club delegates at an AGM tomorrow morning.
Below is the exact wording of the motion being tabled.
“All clubs in membership must make their players available to the League Committee for selection on League Centre squads.
Failure to adhere to selection agreements involving associated academies will result in a fine.”
One worried parent who brought the proposal to our attention – and who wishes to remain anonymous wants clubs and parents to understand the ramifications which could be caused if the rule is passed.
“My issue with the rule is that there could be any number of reasons as to why a young player wouldn’t want to make himself available to a DSL selection side.
“He may have issues with the manager, so if he opts out of the squad is the club fined?
“Or if he has other commitments with another sport – and genuinely can’t give the time required to play for the DSL side – does the club still get punished?
“There could be multiple reasons as to why a young player may not wish to represent the DSL side, but to me this rule is quite draconian, and not very clear, and to be honest in my opinion it’s unfair on players and clubs.
“Club delegates and parents need to be aware of the ramifications this rule could have before they vote on it at the AGM tomorrow morning.”
