On average, 1000 Irish people die every year as a result of alcohol consumption based on a new study done by the Health Research Board.
The new study also showed that in 2014, Irish people consumed 11 litres of pure alcohol. As stated by the Irish Times this is equivalent to 116 bottles of wine, 445 pints of beer or 29 litres of vodka.
The report by the Health Research Board expressed that Ireland’s alcohol abuse dilemma is responsible for nearly 10% of the health budget every year.
Ireland are fourth in the OECD for the heaviest drinkers, the alcohol consumption is also responsible for three deaths a day here in Ireland and also was related to 17,000 hospital discharges in 2013.
The most shocking statistic taken from the report is that 1 in 3 cases of self-harm in 2014 was related back to alcohol, also alcohol is to blame for over 160,000 assaults every year on this island.
