The vital Bonagee Link Road aimed at solving Letterkenny’s traffic gridlock, will not start until after 2021 at least.
The news was confirmed by Transport Minister Shane Ross’s office who said the N56 Letterkenny Relief Road is not included in the capital roads plan for 2016- 2021.
Plans for the road have already included the purchase of a local petrol station by the local authority to make way for the much-needed road.
News of the snub has been met with outrage and anger by Donegal Senator Padraig MacLochlainn.
He said “I am outraged at this confirmation on behalf of the Minister. How can the government state that they are serious about “balanced regional development” while ignoring this road project that is vital to addressing the regular traffic gridlock in our county’s gateway town?
“I have repeatedly raised the need to build this vital link road connecting the Business Park Road to the Dry Arch roundabout over recent years since Donegal County Council completed their design and preparation works.
“We cannot accept this decision in Donegal and I am calling on both the local Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil politicians in the county who are supporting this government to have this five year plan urgently amended.”
He added that he was now challenging Minister Joe McHugh and Fianna Fáil TD Charlie McConalogue who negotiated his party’s support for this government, to “sort this out”.
