GARDAÍ say they have arrested 56 people for various offences over the rally weekend, but say the public disorder in Letterkenny was caused by young people who hadn’t been following the Donegal rally.
However despite warnings of a massive Garda presence along the route and around the county most of the arrests did relate to driving offences.
Incredibly 14 people were arrested for drink-driving.
Inspector Goretti Sheridan revealed the arrest rate as:
3 people for drugs offences
19 people for public order offences
8 drink drivers
4 people for criminal damage
1 driver for hit and run
21 people for dangerous driving, with 6 of them also charged with drink-driving.
“So far there have been 56 arrests which is double the number of arrests compared to last year,” said Inspector Sheridan.
“There was a lot of trouble in Letterkenny into the early hours of Sunday and we found that these people were not at the rally at all; they had come into the town to cause trouble.
“We are also very disappointed at the large number of motorists committing offences on the roads, in particular the large number of people driving dangerously and those drink-driving.”
She said Gardaí will maintain a significant presence on the roads overnight and into Monday.
