GARDAÍ are planning a massive clampdown on idiotic boy racers over the weekend.
The three-day Joule Donegal International Rally starting today could be the biggest ever as tens of thousands of fans pour into the county.
So many fans are coming that a special camping site has been established at O’Donnell Park in Letterkenny to cater for those who couldn’t get accommodation with hotels and B&Bs.
The event is a massive tourism boost for the county and the highlight of the year for fans of the sport.
But as always a small minority of so-called boy racers – and some girl racers too – will be out to break the law.
Gardaí will use a helicopter, motorbike gardaí, regular patrol cars and more than a dozen unmarked vehicles in an effort to prevent a tragedy. Extra speed camera vans are also being dotted around routes leading to the rally.
Organisers have appealed to all fans to stay within the law.
Garda Inspector Michael Harrison said Road Safety Authority engineers will also be joining garda patrols to check for modified vehicles. Vehicles will be seized.
“I would appeal to all fans to drive safely this weekend. All our operations will be concentrating on ensuring the safety of everyone,” he said.
Donegal County Council Road Safety Officer Brian O’Donnell, said: “We want to get the message directly to the predominantly young men who follow the sport.
“We want to remind them of the need to drive safely and to keep the race in its place. We would appeal to all road users to take their time on the roads and do everything they can to increase their safety as well as others, no matter how long or short the journey is and not to attempt to imitate what they see during the race.”
