TAGGED bin bags will be BANNED in Donegal by the end of this month – except if you live in an apartment.
The new ‘pay-by-weight’ laws kick in from July 1.
Most homeowners who currently use tags – bought in shops and attached to bin bags – will no longer be able to use them.
Exemptions will be made for those living in areas where landscape prevents collection of wheelie bins – for example, where an access way is too narrow or too steep, or where there is a lack of storage space – for example, in a terrace house with no garden.
A spokesman for the Department of the Environment said these areas will be “determined by local authorities in accordance with guidelines issued by the Department”.
In these cases the bags will be exempt from the weight requirements.
Under the new system reputable operators are offering homeowners a direct debit scheme – with money either given back at the end of the year if they dispose of less waste, or a top-up payment due if they dispose of lots of waste.
