Outgoing Mayor of Donegal, Cllr Ciaran Brogan.

Outgoing Mayor of Donegal Cllr Ciaran Brogan will today hand over his chain of office to his successor with Ardara’s Cllr Terence Slowey the favourite to succeed him.

Here the Fianna Fail stalwart reflects on his year in office which he says was filled with “special moments.”

This is his statement in full.

Later today at our AGM I will hand over the chain of office to the newly elected Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council and this will mark the completion of my own term of office as Cathaoirleach or Chair of the Council.

It has been an honour and a privilege for me to be the Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council and as such the first citizen of the county. The last year has presented many special moments and memorable occasions for me.

I have visited every part of the county, I have met hundreds of volunteers and community based organisations and I have gained a great insight into the wide range of events and activities that Donegal County Council is involved in.

I have always said that we in Donegal should play to our strengths and focus on the great things we can do. In my year as chairman of the council I wanted to go out and meet the business people in every part of the county and tourism was also an important priority for me. I have seen first hand the huge success stories we have in Donegal and these businesses have been very vocal in their appreciation of the support and assistance provided by the Council as well as other development agencies.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me during the last twelve months including the elected members, the Chief Executive, the Senior Management Team and the employees of the Council as well as my party colleagues, my parents and of course my wife Lorraine, my son Oran and my daughter Maoliosa.

I would also like to take this opportunity to wish my successor every success in the coming year. I firmly believe Donegal is a great place, with wonderful resourceful people and with a great story to tell and I look forward to continuing to work hard get our story heard.
