Donegal produced a vintage, controlled and efficient second-half display to ensure a fantastic win Ulster SFC quarter-final win this afternoon at Mac Cumhaill Park.
Neil McGee was shown a straight red card at the end of the first-half, and Fermanagh were awarded a penalty.
However, Mark Anthony McGinley on his Donegal debut saved expertly and the St Michael’s man enjoyed a sensational debut.
Donegal led by two points at half-time, thanks to a stunning goal from Odhran Mac Niallais, but with Donegal down to 14 Fermanagh were very much in the ascendancy.
However, Donegal were quite simply outstanding in the second-half, despite the numerical disadvantage, Rory Gallagher’s side completed dominated the game with Ryan McHugh controlling the match.
The turning point came on 44 minutes, Donegal were still leading by two at this stage, but a flowing move involving several players swept through the Fermanagh defence and Mac Niallais was on hand again to finish brilliantly.
From that point on there was no looking back for Donegal and they managed to keep Pete McGrath’s side at arms length.
They were economical in possession and counter-attacked at pace and picked them off with ease.
Donegal now face Monaghan in a repeat of last year’s Ulster SFC final in the semi-final.
The only negative from this afternoon was that Neil McGee will now miss out on that semi-final against Monaghan.
However, the 15,918 spectators in attendance would’ve been impressed with Donegal who really did perform superbly, especially when they went down to 14 men.
Pat Spillane reckons Donegal are in decline? On that evidence I don’t think so Pat. Wishful thinking on the behalf of the Kerry man maybe?
Well done to Rory and all the squad on what was a sensational team performance.
