A Carndonagh who killed his parents with an ‘axe’ said he heard his mother’s voice in his head in which she told him to kill her and his father.
Julian Cuddihy, killed his parents Jimmy and Kathleen Cuddihy on October 22nd, 2014 at their home in Carndonagh.
He was found ‘not guilty’ by reason of insanity at Dublin Central Criminal Court earlier this week.
Two psychiatrists told a Central Criminal Court jury that in their opinions Julian’s illness meant he didn’t know that what he was doing was wrong and he could not stop himself.
On the night of the tragedy, he said his mum told him to eat his dinner and he then heard her voice in his head saying: “I want you to kill me and your father.”
Julian’s brother James Jnr pleaded with others to seek help before it’s too late.
He said they tried to get professional help for his sibling but decisive actions were not taken that would have prevented the tragedy.
James said, “We hope nothing like this ever happens to another family. We’d urge families with similar concerns about the mental well-being of a family member to seek timely assistance and intervention.”
Folllowing the trial, Julian Cuddihy was committed to the Central Mental Hospital in Dundrum, Dublin.
