Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has welcomed the passing of a Sinn Fein amendment to a Dáil motion on Motor Insurance.
The amendment complemented the Fianna Fail motion by strengthening it in a number of specific areas.
Speaking from Dublin Deputy Doherty told Donegal Daily: “I am delighted that my amendment to Deputy McGrath’s motion passed in the Dáil this afternoon. The amendment adds to Michael McGrath’s motion by adding in some extra commitments.
“This unanimous vote means the government must implement the motion in full. I will be working with TDs of all sides to make sure it does.
“Specifically, my amendment now means that the incoming Finance Committee is requested to take on a thorough examination of the reason behind these huge hikes as one of its first tasks. I foresee public hearings with key players playing a large part in this examination.
“The motion also calls for a review of the Central Bank’s role as regulator over an industry where they were overseeing what the Bank itself now recognises as imprudent behaviour. It also mandates the government to bring forward legislation to give greater protection to consumers from exorbitant price increases above and beyond industry averages.
“The Dáil has now spoken clearly and the government must listen and act to fulfil the motion. This motion must be more than a piece of paper; it should be a strong roadmap agreed by the Dáil to tackle high premiums for consumers starting immediately.”
