BOXING: A shock proposal currently being touted could pave the way for Donegal boxing sensation Jason Quigley to represent Ireland at the Olympic Games in Rio.
The proposal being tabled would see professional boxers taking part in this year’s games – it has understandably caused a huge stir, with many in the pro game voicing their derision and horror at the proposal.
If the controversial decision was passed, it could see Quigley fight for Ireland in Rio.
Quigley was a top-class amateur boxer and many had tipped him to represent Ireland at the Olympic Games in Brazil.
Quigley became the first Irish fighter ever to reach the AIBA World Championship Final, and many felt he could win gold for Ireland at the Olympics.
However, his sensational performances at amateur level soon caught the eye of boxing promoters all over the world.
Quigley earned a Sky Sports scholarship, and then Golden Boy Promotions, headed by boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya came calling.
The offer of joining such a world class stable, coupled with the lure of a lucrative contract and lavish lifestyle in the USA, was too good an offer for Quigley to refuse.
Quigley had spoke about his dream of representing Ireland at the Olympics, but that was ended when he turned professional.
However, with these latest talks causing controversy, there could be a chance that Quigley may live out his dream after all.
What are you thoughts? Should professional boxers be allowed to compete in the Olympic Games?
