FEATURES: Davitt Walsh, the man who risked his own life to save a four-month old baby from drowning, has been honoured at The Spirit of Northern Ireland Awards.

Davitt, along with his girlfriend Stephanie Knox were honoured at the star-studded event for their heroic actions on the evening of March 20th.

After a lovely day in the stunning seaside village of Buncrana, the car being driven by Sean McGrotty skidded off the pier.

The family clearly in distress, and unable to get out of the car called for help, and it was former Finn Harps and Derry City star Davitt Walsh, who just happened to be at the pier with hos girlfirend – that entered the water in an attempt to save the family.

Unfortunately, Sean, his sons Evan and Mark, mother-in-law Ruth Daniels and her daughter Jodie-Lee sadly lost their lives.

However, thanks to the heroic actions of Davitt Walsh, he was able to save little four-month old bay Rioghnach-Ann.

His girlfriend Stephanie also played a crucial role, and stripped the wet clothes off Rioghnach-Ann, and kept the baby warm, until emergency services arrived.

Louise James hailed Davitt in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, and praised his bravery for risking his own life to save another.

At an emotional ceremony, Davitt was presented with the overall Spirit of Northern Ireland award for his bravery in saving baby Rioghnach-Ann.

Well done Davitt, a truly deserving winner, and an inspiration to us all.
